MAJOR FLOODS on September 2011
1. Water-related disasters in the world 1-1 Flood in United Mexican States At
least 73 deaths and more than 40,000 people affected by heavy rains in
the states of Chiapas, Estado de Mexico, Guerrero, Oaxaca, Sinaloa,
Tabasco y Veracruz in Mexico is allegedly reported where tropical storm
Nate forms in gulf of Mexico in September 7. In Mexico City, over 2,000
families had to be evacuated from their homes after torrential rain
caused widespread flood.

1-2 Flood in China Recent
flood triggered by heavy rain since September 1and related disasters
have left 90 people dead and 22 others missing in nine Chinafs
provinces as of September 21 according to the National Disaster
Reduction Commision(NDRC). Heavy downpours, floods and landslides have
affected the regions of Sihuan, Yunnan, Henan, Chongqing, Hubei,
Shandong, Shanxi Gansu and Qinghai.

1-3 Flood in Japan Two
typhoons hit Japan in September 3 and September 20. Typhoon Talas on
September 3 hit western Japan. 40 persons are dead and 55 missing, 100
persons are injured, more than 15,000 houses are flooded after heavy
rain and fierce winds. Typhoon Roke on September 20, packing winds of
up to 144 kilometers (89 miles) an hour its center, landed in central
Japan and moved northeast. More than a million people were warned to
leave their homes.

2. Updated information about the Great East Japan Earthquake Continuous
efforts are taken on recovery and rehabilitation in response to the
Great East Japan Earthquake. The transportation systems are mostly
restored according to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport
and Tourism (MLIT). As of September 26, it was allegedly reported that:
-No traffic restriction is imposed due to the disaster, except part of Joban Expressway -All Shinkansen lines are in operation, and -All airports are in operation

3. Japan-South Africa joint workshop held Japan-South
Africa joint partnership workshop between the Ministry of Land,
Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) of Japan and the
Department of Water Affairs (DWA) of South Africa was held on 13-14
September 2011. It aimed at building cooperation between Japan and
South Africa in the field of water resources management, particularly
related to water-related disaster mitigation, sewerage and drainage
management by sharing information on the status quo, and exploring
collaboration to access the challenges. At this workshop under the
attendance of Vice Minister for Engineering Affairs of MLIT and Deputy
Minister of DWA, the presentations were made by participants from MLIT,
DWA, Ministry of Finance, JICA, JETRO, Rand Water, local government
from South Africa and private companies from Japan concerning flood
control, water resource management, sewerage management and
water-related technologies.
