2-1.1st Indonesia-Japan Disaster Management Collaboration Dialogue Workshop in Indonesia

The 1st Indonesia-Japan Disaster Management Collaboration Dialogue Workshop was held in Jakarta, Indonesia on November 27, 2014. The persons in charge, from the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing, and National Disaster Management Authority on the Indonesian side, and from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT), and 36 private companies on the Japanese side, participated in the workshop. They exchanged information and their opinions about initiatives taken in both countries, challenges, and technologies regarding the following two themes “subsidence and flood management in Jakarta” and “Coordination and cooperation among related organizations regarding Jakarta flooding”

2-2.2nd Myanmar-Japan Disaster Management Collaboration Dialogue Workshop in Myanmar

The 2nd Myanmar-Japan Disaster Management Collaboration Dialogue Workshop was held in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar, from February 9 through 10, 2015. The persons from the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation, Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement, and Ministry of Transport on the Myanmar side, and the MLIT, JICA, and 20 private companies on the Japanese side, took part in the workshop. The Myanmar side made presentations about policies and challenges in Myanmar regarding such issues as 1) integrated water resources management, 2) flood forecasting and warning, and 3) Emergency Operation Center. Also, the Japanese side introduced 1) integrated water resources management, 2) flood forecasting and warning in Japan and the technologies, and 3) importance of information sharing in disaster management and the technologies.

2-3. U.S.–Japan Symposium on damage mitigation of large-scale water related disasters on Feb. 12, 2015

U.S.–Japan Symposium on damage mitigation of large-scale water related disasters was held at Tokyo Center, Kansai University on Feb. 12, 2015, having Mr. James Kish from FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) as a guest.
After the report about investigation on disaster response to Hurricane Sandy in the U.S. (Oct. 2012) by Mr. Tomoo Inoue, Director, Seacoast Office, MLIT, Mr. Kish made a keynote speech entitled “FEMA’s Capability Development – From Hurricane Katrina to Hurricane Sandy.” Then, Dr. Yoshiaki Kawata, Professor at Kansai University lectured on the need to make the shift to the “countermeasure-oriented society,” and Mr. Koji Ikeuchi, Director General, Water and Disaster Management Bureau, MLIT explained about the disaster prevention and mitigation measures at the “New Stage” where the feature of rainfall has changed.
In the second half of the symposium, the panel discussion entitled “Consideration of disaster management on private sectors in preparation for large-scale water related disasters” was held and 4 panelists, Dr. Haruo Hayashi, Professor at Kyoto University, Dr. Kenji Watanabe, Professor at Nagoya Institute of Technology, Mr. Koichi Takahashi, Director and General Manager, Risk Consulting Department, Sompo Japan Nipponkoa Risk Management, and Mr. Ikeuchi, discussed  the issue of delay in establishment of Business Continuity Management (BCM) on water related disasters and its countermeasures, moderated by Mr. Ichiro Matsuo, Deputy Director, Research Institute for Disaster Mitigation and Environmental Studies.
